What do you call something you have but you find useless? Biologists might have called it an “appendix” – but not anymore.
The human body’s appendix is a finger-sized tube found at the end of the large intestines. For several years, many have questioned its function. It seemed to be useless and was quite popular for being noted as troublesome.
Infections and obstructions can easily block the opening of the appendix. When it gets clogged, the appendix will eventually swell, causing appendicitis. In this condition, the inflamed appendix needs to be removed through appendectomy. Otherwise, it will most likely burst, allowing the infection to spread throughout the body, leading to death.
According to the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, appendicitis kills about 300 to 400 Americans every year. With this alarming research, many have preferred to have their appendix removed. They did not find any trouble at all living without an appendix.
However in 2007, the immunologists and surgeons at Duke University Medical School started to look at this seemingly useless organ in a different light. They published a Scientific Journal explaining that the appendix has its purpose after all.
They learned that the appendix “acts as a good safe house” for good bacteria, which are very beneficial to digestion. The appendix can cultivate and protect these bacteria. Also, research studies at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute say that these good bacteria help prevent injuries in the lining of the intestines.
Discoveries and new findings surprise us every now and then. Scientists, including the most intelligent people in the world, still have a lot to learn. Ergo, it is best to learn from the best – no other than the Almighty. How? Through His words in the Bible.
In 1 Corinthians 2:5, it says,
“That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”
Logically, the best way to learn about an object is through the one who created it.
The human anatomy is perfectly designed by the Creator. Being a God of reason and order, He will not include a useless component in His creations, showing no less than great magnificence. In Genesis 1:31, it says,
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”
From seemingly useless to really useful, the human appendix is a reminder that there is always purpose to what God gives.
