Thin Red Line Separating Movies and Real Life

Posted by admin On January - 21 - 2010

In Philippine movies, it is very common to see policemen responding to a crime at a relatively very late timing. Although sometimes it already seems nauseating and funny, it adds spice to the story as it stirs viewers’ emotions and criticisms. It gives character to the stereotyped movies of the Pinoy culture.

But in real life, it is something. Not only because it is expected only in movies, but also because it costs lives. Especially if these authorities are more than late in responding to an incident, because they are actually present earlier on the scene – much earlier than the victims themselves.

On the bright day of November 23, 2009, so much people died including women, civilians, innocent citizens and media men because authorities are both too early and too late on the scene. The killing was so brutal that it attracted attention from the whole world. On that day, our country the Philippines, became one of the most (or second as other resources say) dangerous place on earth for journalists.

The latest estimate of the total number of casualties is now 64 from which more than half are journalists. This type of carnage is not new to us, but this one is big, the biggest in the world actually.  It held a record that wouldn’t make anyone proud of. It left a dent on the reputation of the country that couldn’t be straightened back by anybody. It left pain and anguish to the hearts of every considerate Filipino that couldn’t be wiped away by sugar-coated speeches and show of sympathy. Enough is enough. Let’s make our voice louder.
